I recently re watched the movie Legally Blonde with Reese Witherspoon, I had seen the film before, when it had first come out, but decided to give it another watch. At first, Legally Blonde seems like a light-hearted comedy about a ditzy blonde seeking to gain the love of her life back. But Legally Blonde is so much more than that. We see plenty of moments of the gaze, specifically during her admissions video, clearly not the typical style of application, she is in a pool, in a pink bikini, with the all male committed granting her admission. Or scenes of her in low cut dresses, or a bunny costume, we see the gaze numerous time. Although Elle Woods begins her journey as a lawyer simply in order to win back an ex boyfriend, and always discriminated against for being the pretty, pink wearing, cosmopolitan reading girl at law school she perseveres and becomes a self empowered lawyer. We see Elle’s postfeminist sensibility as referred to by Gill (2007) in her growth from a sorority girl planning mixers into a self-sufficient individual, becoming successful on her own, using creative thinking and not backing down. She is given a pep talk from Emmett (Luke Wilson) telling her that being blonde gives her more power than she thinks, and she should channel that power into something good. And she does despite moments of self doubt after sexual advances from her boss and professor, again Emmett has words of wisdom for her, suggesting she is not trying to be someone she is not, but rather trying to be someone she is. Her final speech at graduation she highlights having a strong sense of self, and having faith in yourself will lead you to success in life and law.
